Is-Ought Divide

Post by Surlethe »

Is it breachable?

Could one formulate an objective moral system by looking back and defining the role of morality in the past, and then choosing the most parsimonious moral code which fulfills that role?
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Yes. Quite simply. It follows the simple formula of: "They worked out okay, let's do like they did!" It assumes a level homogeny between the 'us' and the 'them,' but provided the culture you are in now doesn't have vastly different taboos and hang-ups to the one you are looking back at, it should work fine.

They worked out well, and we ough to want to keep things that work well according to our goals, so it would make sense to me that you ought to use what worked well.
