Help! Video drivers acting up.

Post by Enigma »

As you may or may not know I have posted saying that my computer slows down to a crawl after playing Guild Wars and other games after an hour then the computer runs out of memory. Well, I decided yesterday to fix the problem by formatting my computer completely and reinstalling WinMe. Formatting the computer and installing ME was easy. I managed to install every driver necessary to run the computer properly except the video drivers. I left that for last. Unfortunately I do not recall if my video card came with a CD or not and I looked around to see if there was a CD for the video card. But I could not find any. So I decided to go to ATI's website (I have a Radeon 9200 SE) and download their latest Catalyst drivers. Afterwards I installed it and rebooted the computer. Now here is the troublesome part. After restarting, the computer didn't complete its boot up. Instead of bringing up the desktop all I get is the blue wallpaper and the icon. That is it. I rebooted a couple of times and the result was the same. I managed though a couple of times to almost complete the reboot but the computer ends up in a perpetual busy mode\stalled. Now when I deleted the ATI drivers and booted the computer back up then all is fine except for a crappy display because all I have are WinME's crappy default drivers.

I have tried formatting again and this time download older drivers but I get the same results. Is there any drivers I can use that doesn't shit on me? The only person on this forum that has the same video card is Einy so I want if he knows any solution??? Help!!!!!!

It sounds like you might have downloaded the wrong drivers, either for the OS, or for the card itself(you have to check against both). Another problem, no offense, is that you have WinME, which is probably the most glitchy windows out there. I'd update if I were you.

I have installed the correct drivers from ATI and ASUS (not at the same time) and all of them failed.

As for WinME, I don't think I've ever had this trouble before. This is the first time I had to format and reinstall ME on my current computer and this computer is only 18 months old.

You've checked the compatablity of the card with the OS and the motherboard?

It is compatible. When I picked up my computer the card was installed and was working with ME. I found the CD that came with the computer and the motherboard and the Video Card are from the same company ASUS (even though it is an ATI video card). I installed the drivers from that CD and I got the same result. wallpaper and the cursor. Nothing else.

it seems that ME doesn't like ATI drivers. :( I'll pass by the shop where I got the computer and ask them how they did it.

Finally got it to work. Apparently I can't just install the video drivers right from the CD or from online. I have to change adapters in the display section. Bah. Worries gone now. May I play Guild Wars for hours.
