Best restaurant POS software?

Post by Arthur_Tuxedo »

I have no expectations that anyone will be able to answer this, but it's worth a shot. There's a local restaurant that I like that still hasn't embraced the computer age, and I mentioned to the owner that I might be able to find out what is the best software for the job.

Desirable features:

Ability to input the menu, so that when someone orders, the cashier can simply select the quantities of each item and it will spit out the total.

Memory of costumers by name, phone number, etc. Also remembers the customer's normal order if they order the same thing each time.

Not sure if this is legal or available, but storage of consenting customers' credit card numbers, so they can just say "charge it". This one is not a vital criterion.

Price is also an issue. A $100 piece of software will be preferred over something slightly better for $500.

The Squirrel system is a pretty standard one I've seen in BC.

They have local resellers in a number of places

Also, what type of restaurant is this? One that makes it money selling food plus a bit of liquor, or one that is basically a bar?

Reason I'm asking is that we have one nightclub type client where they have an absolutely scary inventory tracking system. Partly manual, partly automated, but updated daily into tracking software. They can pretty much tell if a bartender is over/under pouring more than 5%, potential problem areas, etc... This is a pretty customized system that requires a fair bit of management supervision, but apparently makes it very difficult for bottles or even shots to go walking out the door - a major money pit for places.

It's a small Chinese restaurant, so the alcoholic beverages aren't a big issue.

Also, I didn't see a place on Squirrel System's website where they listed features or gave prices.

Thanks for the recommendations so far. :D
