Coming of the Holodeck

Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is planning to create "virtual reality" High-Defintition 3-D TV which will allow you to smell and even touch objects in the 3-D space.
This national research project is meant to be part of a larger vision under which Japan aims to promote "universal communication," a concept whereby information is shared smoothly and intelligently regardless of location or language.
Imagine watching a football game on a TV that not only shows the players in three dimensions but also lets you experience the smells of the stadium and maybe even pat a goal scorer on the back.
How are they planning to do this? Ummm... looks like wait and see."
Looks interesting, 3d tv has been sought out for years, and this is'nt the first recent article about how it should be arriving within a decade.

However the smell part seems like stupidity to me, why would you want to have a component requiring constant refilling. (Although who wouldnt want to smell a Dianoga  )

Not impressed. When they have an actual model released to the worldwide market on a reasonable price for introductory new tech, then I'll be impressed. Until then, it's like those pretty tech demos-- nice, but not gonna happen. Hell, there's not even a model for this, just speculation and cheerful statements...
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Yeah, the smell and touch part is stupid. They should concentrate on full 3-d surround sound/virtual reality integration.

Unless it's a food commercial demonstration, in which case smell could indeed enhance the experience. But that's hardly the main purpose of the tecnology.

So that brings us one step closer to having a large portion of society locked inside to a continuous stream of porn simulations.

A few years back there was development of a computer peripheral that would produce various odors when you visited certain websites. Something like you'd smell flowers when visitng a florist's site.

I don't remember the name of this thing, but who wants smell-o-vision anyhow?
