This may be old news depending where you are in the world, but I heard a news report on ABC radio last night about the possible teaching of ID theory in Australian schools .
I am of course appalled, but the quote that forms the title of this thread cheered me up. In a country whose conservative government is hell bent on plunging beliefs and social values back to the Middle Ages, it's a relief that some people still speak out in the name of reason.
There is some debate as to whether ID should be taught in science classes or as part of religious "education". I don't even see how this is an issue. Even a layman such as I realises that there is nothing at all scientific about ID, whereas evolution has volumes of evidence to support it.
I may not be the most patriotic Australian, but I do not want to see my home go the way of some US states, where those science classes that are still brave enough to teach evolution have to preface their lessons with a lengthy disclaimer that writes it off as a mere theory. With the Assemblies of God gathering strength through Family First and the Festival Of Light protesting at anything even faintly controversial, such madness surely can't be far away. Bring on the pitchforks and flaming torches...

That's the thing; demographically speaking, you're not the average layman when it comes to scientific literacy, and that's why it's an issue.Dooku's Disciple wrote:Even a layman such as I realises that there is nothing at all scientific about ID, whereas evolution has volumes of evidence to support it.

MFG, I read your thread on the subject not long after I posted. Looks like we're both on the same page. Good letter but you won't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting the whole thing in print, if only for the reason you quote in your sig.
