What was the Quickening?

A friend and I had an argument as to what the Quickening was.

As a quick note, the part where he becomes one with the things around him, and Sean Connery yells: "This is the Quickening, this is the Quickening!" is the bit I was referring to.

As a quick note, I'm only allowing arguments from the 1st movie, not that god-awful 2nd movie.

Well, according to my viewing of the last movie, it seems the quickening is some form of seizure resulting from the death of an immortal.

You can intepret it that they are both right. It takes the ability to become one with the things around you to be able to accept and fully utilize the power of a dead immortal, meaning the seizure and light show. Thus the first part is the Quickening as a process in and of itself while the second uses the Quickening to absorb something. Therefore they can both be the Quickening.

This is of course something I made up. Take it as you will.
