Need some ship types and figures for possible FanFic

Post by Adrian Laguna »

I'm thinking of writing a short fanfic, which all you will get to read (in the Fanfic forum naturally). However, there is certain information that I need in order to write something that makes sense. REAL Ultimate Power: The Official Ninja Webpage type wank isn't my style. So it won't be funny or entertaining for me to write that Millenium Falcon and Rogue Squadron fly in and take out half-a-dozen Star Destroyers. I don't want to divulge much of my planned story, and seeing as it is rather short, a little info can be too much.

1) Where can I find good info on Star Wars ships? The Star Wars Databank is of little use.

2) I need Stats (guns, number and type of fighters, shield strength, fire-power, etc.) for the Venator, Victory, and Imperial, Star Destroyers.

3) What is the Rebel equivalent to an Acclamator, or a Venator? Something capable of landing on the surface of a planet with a lot of troops.

4) What kind of fire-power can a surface-to-orbit turbo-laser battery dish-out?

5) What is the best single resource for info on Star Wars space-craft and vehicles? The Incredible Cross-Sections books are nice, but they consist of four separate volumes, and apparently Incredible Cross-sections of Star Wars, Episodes IV, V, & VI doesn't contain info on Mon Calamari ships (and A-Wings, and B-Wings) or firepower figures of any kind.

I believe some of the smaller Mon Cal cruisers can land on surfaces.

Page's Commandos also used a Gallofree light transport to launch a planet-side mission at least once (it is from Rogue Squadron 2, but I believe since the info is part of the game's story rather than mechanics, it is still canon.)

It's possible that only reason MonCal cruisers are seem to be unable land on planet surface like Venators is they're design to land on or into water (Mon Calmari is a Ocean world after all) and at least some smaller MonCal ship are able to "land" into water (aka are Capable of underwater operations).

Good, I won't have to read something that reminds me of Stackpole...
3) What is the Rebel equivalent to an Acclamator, or a Venator? Something capable of landing on the surface of a planet with a lot of troops.
As a rule, there is no such thing. The Rebels don't do a lot of large scale troop actions. They do have transports that can handle companies and battalions at a time.
4) What kind of fire-power can a surface-to-orbit turbo-laser battery dish-out?
There are AFAIK a wide variety. But think of it this way. For 500,000 creds, you can buy a brand new ion cannon (the KDY-150), that will disable a ISD with a single salvo. Adjust your expectations accordingly.
To put it simply, there is no such thing, probably for marketing reasons - why let you buy 1 book with 90% of the info when they can spread that 90% over 90 books?

I suggest you go to here first. That has a great variety of the EU version of the stuff.

Then go to here for the canon data. As a rule, take anything it says over the EU - in general you won't go wrong.

IF you can only buy one ICS, get the AOTC:ICS, because that has the most detailed data. You can use it as a reference to scale the rest of the ships without such data.

Don't bother buying WEG for equipment research. WEG data is everywhere on the Internet. If you buy only one WEG book, get the Imperial Sourcebook - it arguably is the best of the lot and has some insights into the Imperials that isn't a complete mess of Rebel propaganda passing themselves off as objective reports. Actually, there are some ... uh, circuits for urr, obtaining it.

Since you wanted transports, you seem to want troops. Here is a nice site for things like blasters. I really think they made up some of the data (I bet those variants of the E-11 were all from their imagination as opposed to obscure sources), but it has some ideas there. The stereotypical weapon for the Imps is the E-11 blaster "rifle". Rebels like the A-280.

1. Here's some websites with ship info. The gedatabank is mostly RPG info but it's still pretty good.
+http://www.angelfire.com/scifi/ImperialNavyYard/
+http://www.geocities.com/nifshipyards/f_third_1.html
+http://www.galacticempiredatabank.com/
http://www.theforce.net/swtc
plus there's the SW Wiki.
3. Most Rebel troop transports are civilian transports and freighters modified to carry troops. By the NR era they have dedicated troop transports but I can't remember any classes off the top of my head.
4. Considering their size, the effect of the Hoth ion cannon, the fact they can have as big a power source as you want, and the firepower of Separatist monitors. A planetary turbolaser can conceivably fire shots in the petatons. Enough to destroy an ISD in a few shots probably.
5. In my opinion Saxton's Tech Commentaries are probably the best single resource on SW ships and vehicles.

SW Rebellion has one ship, a Bulk Transport, that carries a heap of troops but has no weaponry whatsoever, you could also use captured Galleons or Star Galleons, Dreadnaughts are a possibility, if all else faisl you could just make up a ship class that fits your standards.

As Kazuaki said, the best online resources are the Galactic Empire Databank (EU) and SWTC (canon analysis).
2) I need Stats (guns, number and type of fighters, shield strength, fire-power, etc.) for the Venator, Victory, and Imperial, Star Destroyers.
The Venator has 8 dual-barrelled heavy turbolaser turrets (according to ROTS ICS, the standard main capital ship weaponry) with a max range of 10 light years, 2 medium dual turbolaser cannons, 52 point-defense laser cannons, 6 tractor beam projectors, and 4 proton torpedo tubes (16 torpedoes each). Venators typically carry 192 V-wings or V-19 Torrents, 192 Eta-2 Actis interceptors, and 36 ARC-170s.

The Victory is armed with 10 quad turbolasers, 40 dual turbolasers, and 10 tractor beam projectors. By comparing the rpg damage stats (yeah, I know, really reliable source) of those weapons to what WEG considers to be HTLs, I'm guessing that the 10 quads are MTLs, and the 40 duals are LTLs. WEG originally claimed that it had 80 concussion missile tubes, but WOTC recently retconned it so that it had 80 missiles total, arranged in 20 tubes with 4 missiles each. These missiles are very powerful, and I think one of the X-wing novels claimed that a combined salvo from a VSD's missiles can seriously damage an ISD. VSDs carry 24 TIE fighters. The ROTS ICS implies that the Victory and Venator have approximately the same fighting ability.

WEG claims that the ISD has 60 turbolasers and 60 ion cannons, but that's complete BS. Saxton counts all the visible cannons on the ISD-I and II models here. Keep in mind that only the large and medium guns are actually visible on the models, and that there are numerous light turbolasers and other weapons located all over the hull. There are 10 tractor beam projectors. The Courtship of Princess Leia made a brief mention of quad laser cannons firing at the Millenium Falcon, and I think WOTC recently retconned in point-defense lasers. I also believe one of the novels mentions proton torpedo tubes.

The SW Sourcebook shows a diagram of the ISD's TIE wing. It has 1 TIE Bomber Squadron (low priority ISDs have to make due with TIE/gt), 1 TIE Interceptor squadron, 1 recon squadron (TIE/rc), and 3 TIE fighter squadrons. There's some contradicting info on the number of TIE/fcs there are. On the top of the page, it says that 2-4 of the 48 "TIE fighters" (a general term for the TIE/ln and all its specialized variants) are TIE/fc. Further down on the same page, it says that "1 or 2 flights (in a figher squadron) are TIE/fc," which implies that there's 4-8 of them. Also, one of the TIE fighter squadrons are sometimes merely used for training. By the Battle of Endor, one of the 3 TIE fighter squadrons are phased out in favor of another squadron of TIE Interceptors.

We don't know the exact strength of any of these ships' shields and weapons, but a good guess could be made by comparing them to the Acclamator's. The Acclamator's medium-sized turbolasers were 200 gigatons, and its laser cannons were 6 megatons. I forget what its shields were but they were in the teraton range, I believe. HTLs are probably in the teraton range. Somebody who's good with math could probably estimate relative strengths of these ships' shields and energy weapons by calculating their volumes and comparing them to the size of the Acclamator.
3) What is the Rebel equivalent to an Acclamator, or a Venator? Something capable of landing on the surface of a planet with a lot of troops.
They don't have one.
4) What kind of fire-power can a surface-to-orbit turbo-laser battery dish-out?
The monstrous w-165 Planetary Turbolaser (I think the picture and info is taken right from the EGWT, but the rest of the site is full of fanon) has about 4 times the power of the ion cannon in TESB, and can own ISDs. At 10 million credits, it's a lot more expensive than the ion cannon though.
