Xvid encoder settings

Since I've seen a lot of 700Mb-ish movies encoded with xivd, I was wondering if anyone knew how to configure the encoder to get such a level of quality and compression. I've messed about with it, but if it ends up being less than a gig it's always ass for quality. It's a bit hard to edit avis when I can't process them without losing all the quality and doubling the filesize. Poking around on google didn't turn up any big flashing hints, so I'm asking the professionals!

If you're encoding DVD's use AutoGK. If you're encoding videos that are already highly compressed you're not gonna have much luck.
