Is the rest of the NJO worth getting?

Post by Uncshabob »

I currently own and have read Vector Prime and DT I and II. I've found them to be OK (but too minimalist).

I've heard from people who have read the series said it's not worth it getting any more. I want to hear from the more attuned SW fans.

So, is it worth still readin' the rest?

Skip to Star by Star or the books just preceding it(Edge of Victory?) then skip Dark Journey(just get summeries) and the rest is good.

It's worth reading, but I suggest going to the library first, before you buy any.

Have you ever heard of the "bare-bones NJO" approach? That's when you read only the books that were released in the U.S. as large hardcovers.

Vector Prime
Balance Point
Star By Star
Destiny's Way
The Unifying Force

It's enough to give you a general picture.

Traitor and Star by Star are definitely worth your money, and the Agents of Chaos duology is great. (Hero's Trial is my favorite SW book, period.)

The Edge of Victory duology is decent, but not great. SPOILER: Luke and Mara have a son.

I don't remember much about Dark Journey (that says something right there), but Destiny's Way and the Enemy Lines duology are good reads.

Force Heretic trilogy sucks.

The Final Prophecy is pretty good, but nothing special, and the ending is predictable.

The Unifying Force... I don't like it very much. You certainly have to read it if you want to know what happenned, but I thought it was poorly written (big dissappointment from James Luceno, who is my favorite SW writer after Zahn).

If you don't like it... there's always fanfiction.

Good are the novels by Luceno, Stover and Denning, perhaps Williams and Keyes, but the rest was a waste of trees.

Personally, I'd read them all (but that's just me.)

If you must cut a few, I would definately suggest dropping Balance Point and Dark Journey. Both are pretty boring, lacking in characterization, and overall not very significant to the NJO plot (the latter has at least a bit of character development, but not much.)

However, I do like most of the rest. Star by Star and the Boreialis Duology are quite good, and Traitor is one of my top three favorite EU novels overall.

While not the greatest stuff to read, I would recomend reading all the NJO.

I get every damn Star Wars novel. I have the whole NJO collection, minus the E-books not rerelesed on paper in the paperback editions of the new books.

Anyways the next books the Agent of Chaos books are quite good. Han attempts to forget about Chewie, but cant so he gets some alien to follow him around.
Balance Point was alright but i didnt find myself saying, look Nom Anor is stranding right there kill him, more in this book then anyother NJO book.

Edge of victory i found very entertaining. It is the start of Luke and the other Jedi Masters to finally wake up and say whoa we have to fight. Sadly this is when Jacen decides not to fight anymore

You have to read Star by Star, if you dont, stop reading Star Wars
Everything happens here

Traitor is when Jacen starts to wake up from his dream world that if he doesnt fight things will turn good.

Destinys Way, Jedi start to kick some ass, a nd the Force Heretic books are a great read. The remaining books set up the finale and what the Jedi are going to do. Its the start of the GFFA and the Chiss come into the limelight.

And of course you have to read the Finale the Unifying Force. This sets up everything that will follow in the EU. Im sure for the near future, if you havent read the Unifying Force you wont be able to read any OT PreNJO EU
