Peace Brigade and Jedi Purge

Post by PainRack »

Just how much of the latent anti jedi hatred stirred up during the Yuzhan Vong invasion could be attributed to Palpatine Jedi purge?

Let's look at some of the complaints the Peace Brigade and anti jedi senators had to say.

Valiin, a peace brigadier captured by Anakin Solo and Tahiri at Yavin mentioned that the Jedi noble ideals were all "smoke-screen". Similarly, during the opening attack by the Peace Brigade, the Jedi were accused of provoking and escalating the war at every turn, in an attempt to gain/escalate their political power

Similarly, both Borsk Feylya will come up with similar arguments and more importantly, accuse the Jedi of running havoc outside the Senate. The Jedi are protrayed as outside the Senate power, running rogue operations that damage the Republic and more importantly, are trying to seize power.

Such arguments aren't neccesarily old. During the Black Fleet crisis, Leia Organa was accused of trying to turn the New Republic into a new theocracy, run by the children of Darth Vader.

Could we be seeing remmants of Palpatine former propganda against the Jedi Order, suppressed during the days of Empire as the citizens longed for a "better age", one symbolised by the bravery of the Jedi Knights, only to be revitalised as the galaxy sees new problems that the Jedi can't solve?

The fact of the matter was that the Peace Brigade where literally the scum of the universe and grasped at any straw to justify what they where doing. Though to be fair there is a lot of anti-Jedi feeling still running around the GFFA. It's a natural human trait to fear what you don't know and all to often that fear becomes hate.

WotC's Star Wars Roleplaying Game revised core rulebook also notes on page 295 that many of the galaxy's inhabitants still remembered the Emperor's anti-Jedi rhetorics and propaganda and we're not too keen to trust these "protectors of peace and justice", especially when there had been many Dark Jedi problems after the reformation of the Jedi Order (Kyp Durron and his little crusade with the Sun Crusher, Kueller and his cruel regime, the resurrected Emperor and his cronies, and of course Brakiss and the Shadow Academy).

I think that much of the resistance to the Jedi came from the very fact that the Yuuzhan Vong wanted them so badly that they offered to cease hostilities if the Jedi would be handed over to them (of course, I do believe that the Vong had no intention of doing so) and the Jedi refused, thus dooming the galaxy to another war in the public's opinion (and the Peace Brigade had blamed them for causing trouble for a long time before that). But I highly doubt that the Peace Brigaders and their extragalactic masters would have been so successful if the Emperor had not spread so much anti-Jedi propaganda during his reign. It must have left at least some underlying mistrust towards the Jedi (and during the waning days of the Old Republic the Jedi were sometimes called baby-stealers in any case, so some resentment from the longer-living species against the Jedi might come from that era, not from the Empire's time).

Only the most notorious elements. In Edge of Victory, Conquest, we also noticed that the Peace Brigade comprised of former Imperial personnel, defected NR personnel who had previously fought the Yuzhan Vong and last but not least, hired help.

Furthermore, this simply ignores the latent anti jedi hatred seen in the NR when local officials handed over Dorsk, trapped to trap Han and Leia and of course, Borsk Feylya himself. He may had been spouting shit, but that shit must had existed somewhere.

Hmmm....... this seems to echo a passage in the NJO sourcebook........ I have to see if I can find it.
