Give me the name of a fun shooter

Post by Stark »

I'm bored and cranky, so I want to play a shooter (obviously). But the only shooters I've got atm are UT2k4 and FEAR, and I need another one. Suggest something and I'll pop over and rent it from EB.

I've already become sick of Q4 and HL2. What happened to the glut of shooters? I've been considering installing fucking GORE, that's how desperate I am.

Battlefield 2?

Call of Duty 2?

If you can find it, the old-but-free Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory?

And here's an actual URL with a bunch of shmups:

Not FPS, but it's what first came to mind when I saw shooters.

Do you have Doom 2? I found a kickin-rad, albeit insanely difficult map pack for it called "Hell Revealed".

Mindless fun!

I'm somewhat over WW2 shooters. I'll keep an eye out for CoD2, though, since it's so new.

And Doom2 with mouselook through a modern frontend is way too hard for me. :)

I have FarCry. It's fun and all until the incredibly lame monsters and Squad Of Badguys With Rocket Launchers shows up, but no way I'm playing through the early levels again. :)

Can I suggest Painkiller and Serious Sam? Mindless shooters.

If you want something different (and old), might I suggest Thief Gold? It's not actually a shooter, and the learning curve is steeper than Mt. Everest, but it's a goody.

Thief 2 is very good too, and I'm enjoying Thief 3. Note that Thief Gold and Thief 2 will look very dated compared to most stuff now (think Quake-type models) but they are fun as hell.

The Thief series involves lots of stealthy game play. You will rarely, if ever, survive a 1 v 1 melee encounter. Kills are accomplished by a knife thrust to the back, or sniping with arrows. You can actually play without killing or even knocking out any NPC guards or others, which can add to the challenge. Thief, like Doom 3, is meant to be played in the dark, and turning up your gamma settings will make it look very crappy.

Oh for the christ of course I played T/T2/Tshit to death years ago. And you so will survive melee encounters using the patented 'walk backwards' technique. And Thief/Thief2 doesn't need to turn the gamma up to look crappy. Woe to the world before 32meg video cards. :)

I played Serious Sam when it came out: it seemed *far* to 'mindless' for me. Insane guys run over hill, shoot them. Insane guys run through corridor, shoot them. Repeat one thousand million times, or twice (until bored). I really didn't get very far, as the endless waves of suicide bombers put me off the game pretty fast.

If you want mean on top of mindless you could always go for Postal 2.

As for a more decent shooter.. Ghost Recon or OFP maybe.

AvP2 is loads of fun multiplayer. Story for SP is meh, but the gameplay is a bit different and fun, especially as an alien. Be prepared to be pissed off when you can't find the vent you *must* crawl through as an alien though. Then can't find the next vent. And again. And yet again.

Wish I could play it now, but seems my CD was shot and rendered inoperable... seriously. Anyone know if there is an image for the second CD I can pick up off the net somewhere?

FEAR. Lots of atmosphere, fun shooting action. Ah, crud wait, you said you had that. Far Cry shall have to do, although I have no idea why Jedi Knight 3 comes to mind. Call of Duty 2 can be quite a bit of fun, but if you don't play CoD you could be missing out.
