A problem with blank discs

Post by Ford Prefect »

More specifically, my drives inherenent hatred of them. I put a blank CD in, and the drive will wait a moment, before ejecting it. With no explanation either. Any notions as what's going on?

Wrong side up?

The wrong type of disc shouldn't cause it to eject the disc almost immediately after inserting it. At the most you should get an error message about the drive being unable to read the format.

When my old CD burner started to go wonky, it did things like this. Mind you, it was new in 1999, so that ought to tell you something.

I had problems when they released faster rewritable DVD+R's. I had to upgrade my drive's firmware. You might want to see if there is a firmware upgrade before spending money on a new drive. You might as well get the latest driver and see if you are missing any Windows CD writer updates while you're at it (assuming you have Windows).

My drive will spit the disk out unless I am extremely careful not to get anywhere near the "eject" button when I push the drive back in. I have had the thing for 3 years and I still accidentally eject the disk when I try to close it a large fraction of the time. It will seem to close but then immediately open again. But if that was your problem it probably would have started immediately and not after owning the drive for a while.

Immediately as in before it even takes the time to spin up and identify the disc? With my drive that usually happens when the disc isn't inserted correctly and prevents the drive from properly closing.

To clarify, the disk will spin up, but nothing will come of it. Cheers for the advice though.
