Crysis video - May kick Unreal Engine 3 in the pants

I was never really into Far Cry and Crytek in general. But this thing might really give UT2007 and Unreal Engine 3 in general a run for its money.

If Oblivion doesn't bring your system to its knees, then maybe Crysis will.
I'm a little perplexed about Crysis though. I just read that it's been delayed from winter this year to early next year, because it's a DX10 game and DX10 is going to come out when Vista comes out (or shortly thereafter). Will there be some good DX10 video cards out by then? Will current cards be able to run it with all the bells and whistles enabled? The idea of plunking down several hundred bucks for a new video card isn't sounding too good right now. I've also heard some voices in the mist that it would be a good idea to avoid the first generation of DX10 cards until everything gets ironed out.

Are the current new-gen cards DX10 capable?Darth Quorthon wrote:If Oblivion doesn't bring your system to its knees, then maybe Crysis will.

No. The new cards are just refreshes of the old architecture. AFAIK, the ones coming out later this year should support it.

DQ, Crysis also has DX9 rendering path, but it is slower than the DX10 (DX10 has a lot less overhead), so today's systems will run it.
Shinova, the current-gen cards aren't DX10 capable - they are DX9 parts. The earliest you can expect to see a DX10 card on the market is late summer/early fall, which is when Nvidia's G80 is due (I don't know about ATI's schedule, but I'm guessing they'll be after Nvidia). And the only why Crysis is going to give UE3 a run for its money is if Crytech actually licenses the engine to third parties this time around (Far Cry's engine was for in-house use only).
The only engines that I know of that could challenge UE3 on the market are Renderware, which EA uses internally (and we all know how they shit out games) and still licenses to others, and the Project Offset engine, which is being used by its developer and another third party. I'm not aware of any other high quality engines that can really challenge UE3 in the middleware market, but I may just be ignorant of other engines (and Gamebryo doesn't count - I'm surprised that piece of shit runs Oblivion as well as it does - I'll credit Bethseda's programmers for that).

I can't imagine that it will run as smooth or look as good on a current DX9 system as it will on a DX10 system. And it looks as if there should be plenty of DX10 cards to choose from by the time Crysis arrives.Arrow wrote:DQ, Crysis also has DX9 rendering path, but it is slower than the DX10 (DX10 has a lot less overhead), so today's systems will run it.
Doesn't the UE3 have dual-core optimizations? Any word on whether the Crysis engine will have them as well?

Certainly not, the dev's have stated in the GDC interviews that DX10 will run better. It will probably look a lot better, too. A ton of info should come out at E3.Darth Quorthon wrote:I can't imagine that it will run as smooth or look as good on a current DX9 system as it will on a DX10 system. UE3 supports multicore systems. Its a sure bet Crysis will too.Doesn't the UE3 have dual-core optimizations? Any word on whether the Crysis engine will have them as well?
