Saying smaller engines are better is like saying you don't want huge muscles because you wouldn't fit through the door. So what? You can bench 500. Fuck doors. - MadCat360

but here's some porn for you I guess, if you're into that sort of thing.

To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.
Why do they have to constantly make up fantasy countries with no relation to reality, using REAL WORLD equipment?
Why can't they just take the damn time to puzzle out some original designs for their fantast-wank countries.

Because that would be no fun, it'd be like gran turismo with made up cars.
And what about any manner of FPS where there's a made up country but real firearms are used?

Yeah, like in Grand Theft Auto. When I looked on a map, there is no city called Liberty City. That really shook me to the core. Fraudulent Scots!
When you are making a realisim themed game, it helps to go all the way. I'm not suprised that GTA has fictional cities because its a fictional game, but when a realistic game, say Ghost Recon, has Bumblefuck,Africa as a country, something is wrong.
Yes, I know GR didn't do anyhting like that, I pulled the first name I could think of

Except that they've actually gone to London; see GTA2: London, and the cities in GTA3 and GTA4 are very clearly patterned off real world cities like Miami and Vegas (name changes probably to avoid being sued by the cities themselves for bad PR)
The Ace Combat series however, makes no sense; they go to great lengths in recreating the aircraft in 3D; and then tack on completely fictional superpower countries all over the world; which utterly defeats any "realism" of the game.
The F-14 for example, was evolved to meet a specific set of requirements by the USN, so why is it appearing exactly as it is in Ace Combat for the fictional continental power of Loonystan when the US as far as I know, does not exist in the Ace Combatverse; same with the Eurofighter Typhoon; which was a result of a multinational coalition of nations which doesn't exist in the Ace Combatverse.

I think that the choice of fictional nations is to avoid any accusation of racism or imperialism.
In Front Mission they pull the same string: Earth, but fictionals nations.
More over since Ace Combat 3, the player isn't a mercenary anymore and a fictional country helps a lot to get Su-35, Rafale and F-22A in the same airforce.
Why isn't Belkan a play off Balkan? The images certainly looks like what I might expect from the region, although the same could be said for much of eastern Europe.

The problem with the real world is that you are constrained by the political situation of the real world. That, and nukes. Ace Combat verse doesn't have nukes, or at least it doesn't have many (AC4 had a grand total of one nuke, and it really didn't have any more boom than an air-fuel bomb). In AC4 there is this giant continet spaning war. How exactly are you supposed to do that in the real world and have the audience buy it? Russia vs. USA? USA vs. China? Both are very unlikely.
In any case, every dammed Ace Combat game has taken place in the same "alternate Earth" I don't think they're going to change it.
Plus, in any real world situation now, there's no nation that can really stand up to the might of NATO air power, so it'd be a pretty short game unless it was WWIII or some such, or a scenario ripped from something like F-22: TAW or LO:MAC.
What's all this talk about realism? This is just an arcade game, the only realistic thing about it are the plane's names, it's not like Ghost Reacon, it's more like Need for Speed.

Why can there never be a real sim on consoles?
I was told they'd made it realistic in the latest incarnations. Evidently not, which is what puts me off these games in the first place. And you'll never get a sim on a console, it's not doable without a keyboard and decent joystick, plus, no one with a console wants a 400 page manual to play. We have PCs for that.
I also prefer a 400 page manual over the 2 page booklet and a game pad for a controller, but i kinnda hoped this would be a proper flight game from what i had heard.

Because real sims are for boring bastards, who like the idea of flying several hours of CAP in real time.

Ace Combat is an arcade shooter, it does not try to be realistic. It uses real looking planes because the only time they used made up ones (in AC3) everyone hated it.

Vs. Mode has 'realistic' settings that you can enable. i.e. 4 All purpose missiles, and 2 special weapons (AMRAAM) + realistic guns amount.
The infinite gun and stuff is just cause whoever is playing it is on easy.
Oh, and for the whole Country thing:
Osea: USA
Yukobania: Russia
Belka: Germany
