Hypothetical question
This just popped into my head.
It's said the Force 'binds the galaxy together', does that mean the Force, if someone was able to harness enough of it at once, could also destroy the galaxy?

Well the Death Star's power is supposed to be insignificant to it according to Vader, but I've never read the EU books so I can't tell you if any Sith Lord types ever try extinguishing suns or whatnot with the Force.
To me at least that phrase is more metaphorical - the Force links all living things in the Galaxy, thus in a way it binds them, and thus the Galaxy, together.

Ummm...right.
I'll point you both to a word you can definitly attribute to this:
Hyperbole
This small word will explain both Vader's bit as well as Yoda's quote.

The 'binds the galaxy together' bit is from Ben in ANH IIRC, but GR is definitely correct. I strongly suspect those were not serious quantitative statements.

Riiiiiight. Let's ignore the devices they used to E-N-H-A-N-C-E their powers.OmegaGuy wrote:Freedon Nadd and Exar Kun did supernova stars with the Force.

Re: Hypothetical question
*IF* someone was able to harness enough of it at once, probably. Far as we know, the force is present throughout the universe; it has to have quite a lot of energy.OmegaGuy wrote:It's said the Force 'binds the galaxy together', does that mean the Force, if someone was able to harness enough of it at once, could also destroy the galaxy?

Why, exactly is that statement "Crap"? Putting aside the true capabilties of the Force, as Yoda noted himself, his very existance and power demonstrates that the Force is quite beyond pure physicality, and most probably possessing far more potential for change, if used correctly.but as yoda says "size matters not" which is crap in my opinion

Becasue he has to concentrate to lift the heavy metal pilon thats going to crush obione and anakin, as well as the X-wing in the swamp. If size mattered not he could do this easily while fighting Dooku without having to throw away his saber and close his eyes in concentration (he has no problem throwing two blokes against a wall for example) Also if size mattered not then a jedi could literaly rip a planet apart with thier minds, if so why the hell would they need death stars which would give this power to non force uses, making the sith vulnerable to a fleet takeover

But as far as destroying actual non organic matter - I don't think so

You do know what a No Limits Fallacy is, don't you? Just because something is said not to be bound directly ny physical limitations does not mean it has unlimited power and potential. Indeed, it is noted is several EU source (Yoda:DR is one, I think) that even the greatest Jedi is bound by his inate and primal connection to the physical world, and thus can never harness the Force's true power, whatever that may be.Darth Tanner wrote:Becasue he has to concentrate to lift the heavy metal pilon thats going to crush obione and anakin, as well as the X-wing in the swamp. And you don't even grasp your OP do you?OmegaGuy wrote:The point is not their personal power, it's the power of the Force was able to do it.Ghost Rider wrote:Riiiiiight. So let's take this into context. It's shows what the Force can do. Under specfic conditions, amplified by devices.
So you want to show that the Force could do this otherwise, or are you just going to apply more cicular logic?

And you propose to do this how, exactly, since every instance of the Force ever observed has to do with its usage or preception by a Force-user?OmegaGuy wrote:No, my point was to figure out what the Force could really do if it was not limited by the frailties of its users.

Another idea
In the Dark Saber book (i think) the jedi were able to throw 25 star destroyers across space, almost destroying them, at the cost that Dorsk 81 got burned to a crisp by the shear power of the force flowing through him. Although this book has serious problems with realism (ie those 25 star destroyers can barely burn down a tree) it does show the shear power of the force, but also the cost of using it, maybe this is why yoda had to concentrate? he didnt want to burst into flames!

Gotcha...and sugar could perform feats of derring do that would blow away anything every existed if not for the frailities of the body.OmegaGuy wrote:No, my point was to figure out what the Force could really do if it was not limited by the frailties of its users.
You're a fucking moron if you don't grasp IT IS THE USER that is needed. Without it...energy just sits there waiting to be used

Yoda is clearly adressing Lukes self-doubt that he could do it, the "Do or do not" statement is linked to this, what he is basically is saying is "if you have enough control the force do it, If you don't then fail.. but do not fail because you lack the belief that you can do it".Darth Tanner wrote: but as yoda says "size matters not" which is crap in my opinion
You must un-learn what you have learned also deal with the fact that a farm boy from Tatooine might Mentally find it pretty hard to belive that he can actually move objects weighing several tonnes with his mind alone..I don't really think that Yoda was making a statement about the power of The Force on that occasion.

There is the physical galaxy for which the binding force is gravity, and there is the life of the galaxy that is bound together by the Force.
A biological being can use a physical implement to affect the physical universe in varying degree.
Similarly a Force user can use the Force, that is also a biopower, to affect the physical universe.
