Death

Out of curiousity, when you die, do you think it is just "the end"(sort of like when it seems that you fall asleep and then wake up instantly in the morning, with no comprehension of the passage of time, except without the wakeup) or something else?

This is why sometimes I guess a religion could be comfortable to many; they go into this "end" without fear. Plus, even an eternity in hell, where you are still conscious , may seem preferable to just "the end."

well, I beleive in the eternity thing, so can be rather casual with life at times.

I dunno. Probably it is just the endless, dreamless sleep, but it's the end in any case. We'll see.

I believe that one's consciousness stops functioning to the point where memories once held in the neurobiological bonds degrades into soup as the body also decays.

Yes, it would be nice to know that there is something beyond death, that we can exist after, be in whichever form, but quite frankly, and most likely there isn't. Your heart stops to pump blood, your brain cells die from oxygen starvation, and that's it. No thinking about it, can save a lot of worries in my book. I'll just worry when it comes...

It'd be nice if your consciousness, whatever it is (your soul, if you wish), would detach itself from the body upon death. Then you can do whatever it is that spirits do after death.

Well, there's still the reincarnation... Which is a much more enjoyable proposition than either Heaven, or Hell, in my opinion.

Ever been knocked unconscious? Between the time you're out and the time you wake up, to you, it feels like only an instant has passed. In other words, you don't perceive time.

Just imagine never waking up. There's nothing to fear from death, because you can't fear it once you're dead.

I think of death as a spiritual mother-in-law. It haunts your thoughts, you fear it's approach. Occasionally your forced to deal with it, and you hear stories about how to deal with it from others. Finally, at the end, it's there, pointing out how stupid and unremarkable most of your life really was...

Well, for everybody else, it's "the end." They have to dispose of your corpse! For you, well, you never knew what hit you. And it's a bit more final than sleep. At least when you're sleeping, your brain is still doing information processing. When you're dead . . . you're . . . well, dead. Nothing more takes place.

Once one looks past that deep-set fear of death that's hardwired into our hindbrains, there's really no rational need to fear death and it's effects on you. After all, you're there and conscious one moment and not there at all the next. Of course some would prefer an eternity of boredom, or an eternity of torment, but their hindbrains have 'em by the short-and-curlies.

*sighs* I hope by the time I'm almost dead we will have developed the tech to download one's entire conscious into a computer (i mean turn it into an AI) before the physical body dies. Given that this comp can access the internet, I can be EVERYWHERE

But, of course, that's just wishful thinking.

Would you really? You would be able to handle everything and everyone you know wither and pass away around you? A eternity of being alone(by which I mean that you will have no one with you who could understand what and who you are). I think a few centuries might be interesting but absolute immortality? No thanx.

Euthenasia exists because many would prefer oblivion to a few months or years of physical pain and humiliation.

No sane person would prefer eternal torment to oblivion. That would be like prefering 8 hours of nightly electrocution to sleep.

Oh to become a free floating consciousness without the cares or worries of a human body. Do you know how hwne you sleep you dream? I think when you die your consciousness fades away intoa permanent dream to accompany your permanent sleep, maybe you get to control it and maybe you don't who knows.

I once had a dream that lasted a month, when I woke up I realized I had only slept for 6 hours. It was one of the strangest things that ever happened to me.

I once had a nightmare that lasted 6 months - I was working at a local company that had no respect for its employees, and promised greatness but never delivered. I shook myself awake one day, handed in my resignation, and came to work at my current job.

If you don't know where you were before you were born, how can you know where you'll go after you're dead? I can't imagine it's an unpleasant experience - what would be the point of that?
