Hell frozen

THE INTEL only shop, Dell, has decided to start using an AMD Opteron chip in one of its high-end servers.

Dell CEO Kevin Rollins said that it was a fairly small category and so it was not an abandoning of the glorious alliance between Intel and Dell.

That was not to say that Dell would not use AMD chips in its PCs or other servers in the future, but whatever happened, Intel would remain number one, he said.

Out of all the PC products that Dell was planning this year all of them will use Intel chips, but he didn’t say what would happen next year.

Rollins said that Dell had not moved to AMD in its server products sooner because it had been "waiting to see what its customers who bought its servers wanted".

"AMD was very successful, so we are using it," he said.

Chuffed AMD senior vice president Marty Seyer released a statement welcoming "Dell, and Dell customers, to the world of AMD64."

"Dell is a customer-focused company and we’re pleased to see that they are listening to their customers and providing them the choice of innovative AMD products. We look forward to working closely with Dell in bringing the benefits of AMD leadership in performance-per-watt solutions to Dell customers," he beamed. µ

Hell has frozen over indeed.

All I can say is, its about fucking time...

Dell's next move should be to introduce a new subbrand of AMD-equipped machines to run alongside their existing XPS, Optiplex and Dimension brands. Dell needs to rationalize their brand architecture and basically set up two parallel sets of brands, an Intel brand (heavily oriented towards laptops and mobile devices, as well as enterprise systems) and an AMD brand (heavily oriented towards consumer and gaming desktops).

I can't help but say though, I almost feel that this is too little, too late. AMD's leadership position in the semiconductor industry is tenuous at best, and Intel's new products appear to be doing quite well. I can't help but feel that Dell should have done this two years ago, rather than waitning until the AMD party was effectvely over.

AMD remains secure in the server and HPC fields, but K8L had better be good to remain competitive with NGMA.

Ace, didn't you show me Google's graph of AMD's stock price? It looked like the thing nearly doubled!

It spiked, but since this is the weekend, I'm not sure it will move much, Rthurmont would know more.

ANd Thurmont, infact it's possibly the stupidest move just when Intel releases it's next gen and Dell will need every CPU Intel can ship to them.

Well, it seems AMD went from 31 to 34 in the space of a day.

In the space of the same timeframe, INtel crashed.

The stock was selling at a high of $18.85 yesterday but sunk to $17.94 this morning after the Dell announcement, a value not seen since April 2003. Meanwhile, AMD's stock climbed to a high of $33.95 today, up a cool $2.55 from yesterday's high of $31.40. AMD's highest share price in five and a half years was on January 31, when the company's stock was up to $42.10.

In a note to investors, an analyst for Merill Lynch claimed the Dell partnership could boost AMD's server market share to 26% by the end of the year, compared to 22.1% last quarter and 7.4% a year before. The analyst added that growth should continue next year, at which point AMD may hit a 30% server market share.
