Any Non-WWII Historical shooters?

Post by Comando293 »

Are there any? I seem to recall a Battlefield: Vietnam. Did it exist, and was it any good? Are there any others of mention?

Vietnam exists. It was pretty good. Arcady, but all of the BF series is the same way.

A while back, their was a slew of Vietnam FPS games- none were outstanding though.

actually i can recommend vietcong (the first one, the second is total crap), which was pretty awesome. i also remember an alternate history game in which world war one never ended and the world was engaged in that war for decades and it even became the center of the stockmarkets. there's a few desert storm games out there, though none any good. a few alternate histories with war between the soviets and nato. other than that though....

Outcast, you are thinking of Iron Storm. It's 1964 and the Great War has raged continously since '14. Fifty years of continous war. The Russians, Germans, and Austrians are this massive power, and the front line runs down the length of modern Germany.

I've heard it is an okay game. Nothing particularly outstanding or noteworthy. Basically you are an uber soldier that must single-handedly cut his way through armies in order to destroy the evil enemies and their super-weapon. All pretty standard, the only complaint is that there is nothing innovative exept the unique story.

There's also Stalin's Subway, of course. Glorious MGB action in 1952!

Have a very nice day.

Operation Flashpoint is another one. However, it's supposed to be absurdly hard from what I have heard about it. Take of it what you will.

It's not hard (well, the Russian campaign is) but it's very unforgiving. Lots of fun, though - nothing quite like hiding from Hinds and stealing BRDMs. :)

Operation Flashpoint for the win.

Its unbe-fucking-lievably huge in scope and potential.

I personally have a collection of likely more than 10,000 third party addons for the game, ranging from graphics updates and changes to animation, to new weapons, soldiers, vehicles, armour, helis, planes, boats, emplacements, building, terrain...

And for anyone who thinks that OFP looks dated:

Vietcong is also brilliant. We should organise an SDnet game of it at some point, have a campaign - I call radioman btw, I don't trust anyone else to call in airstrikes.

The resistance campaign was a giant pain in the arse... Inventory management for your entire army made it both great fun (loot men! Loot for your lives!) And a giant pain in the arse (You have to individually order each man to pick up each object, down to individual magazines and grenades).

There is a "Gods and Generals" video game. That's a Civil War FPS. I seriously do not recommend it, though. It is an amazingly shitty game. Possibly even worse than the movie.

There's also an FPS called Men of Valor by Sierra, it's a Vietnam shooter. Personally I wasn't overly keen on it, but you might like it.

There's been a couple of western themed ones, Lucasarts Outlaw from years back, and one or two that went straight to budget that I can't recall the name of.

Yeah Men of Valor kind of blew...kind of really blew.

What was that one Vietnam game that was squad based, where you lead like three NPCs through the jungle with you. That sounded like it had some promise.

If you have half life or HL2, you could look into Battlefield. It's a revolutionary war mod that isn't half bad.

If you are referring to "Conflict: Vietnam" I demand that you get down on your knees and beg for mercy. That game sucked. As did "Shellshock".

Vietcong is the true king. If you ignore the tunnel levels you had a really really strong game.

That mission was cool! It's neat coop too, with a few bunches of you hiding in the dirt, waiting for the booms... then firing your laws, suppressing the shit out the troops with MGs while you move in and take them out. Great stuff. :)
