Eon8: Weird countdown website...

Have any of you heard of this thing? I've seen it mentioned on several websites and a good many YTMND have gone up for it. Apparently it's counting down to the 1st of July and I've been seeing conspiracy theories about it left and right ranging from game promotion to online terrorism. Does anyone here have any kind of info on this or heard anything more about it?
http://www.eon8.com/
It apparently has a .org and .net address as well. I haven't seen it myself, because my computer won't connect for somereason, but based on what I've seen it is in fact a real site.
Also, a link to a YTMND concerning this particular site. Quite interesting:

I've seen this sort of thing before, and it turned out to be nothing but a book promo.

It appears to be an attempt to look like a government website, although strangely it does indeed have either real or faked referrals from government websites. Probably the latter.
I'm betting on a Book or more likely a Game promo. Either that or it's an ARG for one of those or somebody's amusement.

Yes, I know a lot about it from ytmnd.
One guy emailed them and got an email that said "You don't know what you are messing with."

This is an anticlimax in the making. If that "Don't know who you are messing with OOGABOOGA!!!!" thing is true, then I imagine it will be even more of an anticlimax. I can count the number of times someone talking shit on the 'net has managed to back it up on one hand, and I have heard a lot of shit talk.
As for the counter itself? Seen them before. It's a Gimmick to sell something, and it seems the YTMNDs gave it exactly what it is after: Publicity.

Obviously not, because if they did, then there would be no need to email them, or they, or it.

Well, if it is a marketing stunt (which it almost certainly is), it is a very effective one.
One hour and counting, I believe.

This is the ytmnd where the guy posted the email he got:

Well, the countdown should be done by now. Anyone able to get the site to come up?

The Timer Is Done But The Site's Server Is Down From Hits. No Idea What Happened.

Did anybody else just have SDnet go down?

I think ytmnd DDOS'd it as a preemptive strike.
I heard some people talking about doing that.

Yeah, just happened to me too.
My first thought was "Eon8 = Darkstar"

Heh, that's exactly what I thought too.
In any event, I have come to the conclusion that YTMND has just saved the world by flooding eon8's bandwith. It all makes perfect sense.

Okay, this page was linked to now on it. Eon8 was just a big joke of someone seeing how interested he could get everyone.

This Mp3 was linked to

I'm rather annoyed. I wasted an hour over this? I expected at least marketing for a product that I might be interested in.
Those are both mirrors, but people from Unfiction,
the place for ARGs, are saying they managed to get into the webpage despite the server load and see both things so I believe the chat. There are also screens, people confirming, Wikipedia concurs, etc.

Since I was doing other stuff until the 5 minute mark, and multi-tasking until the 20 second mark, I don't find I've wasted time over it.
The guy's conclusions are unsurprising, interesting, but unsurprising. It's be nice if he wrote a paper on it, I'd be interested in reading it.

Well at least some entertaining ytmnds came out of it.
eon8timer.ytmnd.com
eon8id4.ytmnd.com
bauervscomputers.ytmnd.com
mulletmansaves.ytmnd.com
eonhero.ytmnd.com
whatx13600means.ytmnd.com
itsonlyacalendar.ytmnd.com
And many more!

eon8truth.ytmnd.com/
is good too.
And would have been way more entertaining than "Lol Punked"

I honestly can't believe people still fall for stuff like this.

I would have posted that one too, but I was afraid most people here wouldn't get the NEDM thing, it's a ytmnd in-joke.

by Stark
Hate to break it to you, but MOST ytmnds are in-jokes.
But seriously, what did you and the ytmd drones expect? A doom laser? Super virus? Boobies? How can you be so naive?

It's the way ytmnd works.
We pick up on something insignificant, and make a huge deal out of it with parodies, photoshopping, sound mixing, the works.
It's called a fad, and there is a new one approximately once every week.

by Stark
So... you made a big deal out of someones site then DOS'd it? What a pack of retards.

What a pack of retards.
That's practically our motto.
Although, seriously, only the really paranoid people actually DDOS'd it.

I wonder why his site went down? Then again, I guess he probably just pulled it since his crazy experiment was finished.
At least I know why most ytmnds are utterly meaningless now: in-jokes.
