Windows game activation?

Microsoft is looking at a scheme where games can be activated over the Internet, much like Windows itself, as a part of its Games for Windows initiative. Once installed and activated, you don't need the disk to play

This is just a passing reference in an entirely different article. Does anyone know anything else about it?
