A little magnetic accelerator that has been festering in the back of my mind for nearly half a decade.
The accelerators themselves would be ring magnets, ether really strong natural magnets or powered ones, with the north (Blue) and south (Red) on each face.
The key to getting this to work is the projectile. It has to have an outer surface that is all one polarity, thus making it possible to accelerate it without 'pulsing' the magnets on the barrel.
As it is (as far as I know) impossible to have the entire projectile be of one polarity, the projectile would need to consist of bar magnets held in place by nonmetallic materials.
This would allow the outer magnetic fields (the south polarity) to come within attraction and repletion range of the fields generated by the ring magnets.
This is by no means a perpetual motion machine, if powered magnets are used it has to be constantly feed energy. If natural magnets are strong enough to be used it would last longer but even natural magnets lose their power eventually.
This is also not a means of accelerating a projectile up to near light speed.
Lets say that the magnetic projectile weighs about 3000lbs and is fairly sturdy, its given an initial kickstart from a 16inch naval gun accelerating it up to 2800fps/1909mph. lets also say that each ring magnet gives it just a 5% boost.
Even after passing 34 ring segments its speed is only 10028.64 mph, extremely fast but not Ls (I think, what's light speed in mph?).
Even if you were to loop the tube into a circle, so that it could pass the rings an infinite amount of time it would be going too fast for any kind of mechanism to release it.
I remember asking my highschool science teacher about it, he said that the ring magnets would have to be powered and/or the nonmetal used to hold the projectile together would not be strong enough and that its connected magnets would push apart from each other at speed.
What do you think?
Is it confirmed, posible, or busted? (i've been wacthing too much mythbusters )
Would this work?

What's this for? A weapon? A payload delivery device? You have to remember that you'll still get recoil, and that will be a lot for something going fractional relativistic speeds. I am reminded somewhat of the Demarchist relativistic railguns in Alastair Reynolds' novels which consist of 1,000 km tubes with cobalt nukes in them detonating to accelerate a big chunk of metastable hydrogen to .7 c. Recoil isn't a problem then, but it is a one shot weapon.
Incidentally, use metric. NO scientist or engineer should be using that fucking stupid Imperial system the English invented. It's nonsensical.

Leading-edge research is generally done in metric, but in industry, the Imperial system is still heavily used, unfortunately.

I don't understand how this is supposed to work. There's no switching or anything. Can you describe what happens during the launching sequence? Also, if I take a thousand bar magnets, and embed them in a plastic sphere with all the Souths pointing outwards, then place another one of these magnet-spheres nearby, what do you think would happen?

The basic idea is that the cylinder (the second pic is just a cut away of the projectile in the first pic) would have the fields of one polarity facing outward, thus having much greater interaction with the fields coming off each halve of the ring magnets. Lets say the south side is facing outward, the fields from this polarity interact with the north side of the first ring magnet pulling it toward it. Once it gets to the hole in the center of the ring momentum carries it through to the south side, with the south fields on the bar magnets facing outward they will repel against that side pushing the projectile towards the next ring whose north side is attracting it. repeat

Okay, let's say this arrangment actually works, and you get a bunch of permenent magnets for the ring magnets. You shoot off the projectile at some speed, but then have the projectile impact a paddle-wheel connected to an electrical generator. You extract the projectile from the target and slowly drag it back to the barrel (moving it around the barrel) to the start position.
It seems to me like you've created a perpetual motion machine of the first kind, which is forbidden by the first law of thermodynamics. Therefore, your arrangement will not work.
