Thunderbird problems

...I think maybe I should've stuck with Outlook, first off.
Anyway.
I'm having some weird issues with Thunderbird.
First of all, for the messages I don't have filters for, sometimes if I shut down Thunderbird and open it again, it randomly decides I can't see said messages. They don't show up in my searches. They don't show in the folder. For all intents and purposes, they don't exist... and then they magically appear later. Wtf?
Secondly, sometimes I'll get an error that essentially tells me (if I'm trying to move/delete a message) that it's being used by another process (when I'm not DOING anything else)... sometimes this will happen when I first open Thunderbird.
Third, for said messages, if I try to open them - they open, but there is nothing IN the message. Even for the messages I KNOW should have something in them.
Any ideas what's going on/what to do?
