Titanic, Pearl Harbor, and Chicago. (never saw Chicago, though, as it looks like a load of arthouse crap)

Perhaps, I personally found it fairly entertaining. Either way there's no massive over rating of it compared to other movies that have been discussed. Most people though it was at best a passabe movie and nothing more.

It was a new experience for white folks. Most have never seen something like it, which was not a terrible movie but not great either. In my opinion they saw something new, decided it was terribly cool to experience "diversity" and proclaimed it great.

Titanic, Chicago, a Beautiful mind are all shit IMO

TPM was hyped up to be better than the OT but IMO it's a good film but no wehre near the OT.

Titanic: Over over overhyped.

Matrix Reloaded: Everything hyped up was pointless, like the Neo vs. 100 Smiths.

Hero: Despite the fighting scenes, the plot and dialogue was laughable as well as predictable. And the hidden viewpoint made me sick.

Though I don't agree, I can understand why I see CTHD in previous posts, old style wuxia plot plus Chen Chang with Tzui Chang is a disaster for the pace of the film.

Ring (Original version): While everyone was waiting for/scared about the ghost to crawl outta TV, I was waiting for Nanako to crawl out and go out with me. I think that describes enough.

Crouching Tiger was not a kung fu film. I cant believe someone here complained about a kung fu film being ruined. It is a beautiful film that is deserving of praise, and yes, it happens to have some martial arts in it. If the film isnt your cup of tea then fine i guess, but dont misrepresent and misunderstand the film. This isnt a Jackie Chan flick.

Pulp Fiction dull and boring? Whatever. And personally 2001 is one of my favourite films but i can understand its slow pace may bore those not looking for that kind of experience. As for Citizen Kane, well, thats just a fucking masterpiece. I'm not sure what you were expecting but its not any sort of action film or anything. Its high ranking amongst film lovers is due to its age mainly--its a film of enormous historical importance. Certainly there are more entertaining films, but there a fewer films of more importance than Citizen Kane and i would say that it holds up just as well today as it did in 1941; i would certainly rank it as perhaps the greatest film of all time.

As for most overrated film IMO? Thats a hard one. I would probably have to say The Godfather maybe. Yeah i know after all that snobbish "movie classics" defending I'm listing The Godfather. Its impressed me very much on a technical level--the photography, narrative and structure are all very well done but i didnt care for the characters at all and i found its 3 hour running time to be much too long. Its not a bad film by any means but its certainly not all its praised to be and i was very dissapointed upon my first viewing just a short while ago after hearing so much about it. Maybe i need to watch it again but i just didnt care for it. About Schmidt is another example. A good film, and one that i enjoy enough to own, but still a little overrated.

National Lampoons Old Skool. I'm sorry but i hated this movie. I found 3 jokes i thought funny and that was it. It was lame, childish and has all been done better in American Pie 1-3.

Old Skool wasn't a National Lampoon movie. You've either got it mixed up with National Lampoon's Van Wilder (which wasn't that funny) or the Will Ferrel movie Old Skool.

I definatley heard that Ols Skool was National Lampoon, it's the one with Owen Wilsons not so funny brother in it. Van Wilder was fucking excelent. i love that movie. Mostly for Ryan Reynolds and Tara Reid but the dog semen scene was very amusing.

Chicago, BAH!!! I just forgot about that movie after one of my ex-roommates (the hyperactive cuban guy who looked like a 12 year old) went NUCKING FUTS about it! I never thought someone could sit through that shit ten times in a row, much less voluntarily! Worse: I couldn't stop him singing All That Jazz for a whole week after. YAUGH!

Thank the Goddess for Heavy Metal!

Old School isn't a Nation Lampoon movie. Just done in the same sort of style as the 80s National Lampoon movies.

And Van Wilder just sucked. None of the gags were very funny and most were so predictable. Just not a good movie.

Full Metal Jacket

On the first viewing it's cool. But after that, all anyone ever watches it for is R Lee Ermy and Boot Camp. And even that gets old after awhile (though that may be because they've watched it about 40 times in the wardroom since early September...I wonder how a VHS is still going after that? :? )

From what I heard, The Piano was pretty damned boring and pointless too.

Oh, and (*dons flame shield*) Monty Python and the Holy Grail as well. Sure, it was pretty humorous at points, but when I watched it, it wasn't that great...but then, I heard it gets better after the second viewing, so maybe that'll change if/when I see it again.

That's not even Holy Grail, that's Life of Bryan.

My nominations:

2001, Titanic, CTHD, Moulon Rouge

My nominee is Gone With the Wind. It's not a bad movie but if you adjust the box office it is supposedly the greatest money maker of all time.

My problem with it is that it (and the book) is just a romance novel over-hyped into some monster epic. Personally I can't stand the whiney-assed spoiled brat heroine. At least Rhet tells her to fuck off.

I do kind of like the burning of Atlanta part but in general I just hate this movie because of "how good" it's supposed to be.

Brian.
And that wasn't his point.

'm going to have to go for Titanic, as well as Nightmare on Elm Street, The Exorcist and Gladiator.

Oh, and Blair Witch

I thought Apocalypse Now was boring as all-get out after the "Ride of the Valkyries"/I-love-the-smell-of-napalm-in-the-morning part, but then again I've heard you have to be on drugs to really appreciate it.

The movie scenes you mentioned aren't in Platoon they are in Apocalypse Now.

I happen to like that movie but it can be boring. That's why I like DVD so much. You can skip to the good scenes or fast forward through stuff.

At least it's visually impressive. Now, The Blair Witch Project - that movie was promoted as if it was the most creepy piece of fiction made since H.P. Lovecraft wrote his short stories... and when I watched it, all I saw were a bunch of confused campers and the occassional scary moment, but the dullness far outweighted the spookiness.

I disagree. Sure, the boot camp stuff is great, but the war segment was equally brilliant, just on different levels. Whereas almost every other Vietnam war movie dealt only with the soldiers while they were in the shit, FMJ takes us on the soldiers' journey from the beginning.

Most of the movies everyone has listed I agree with, but one I feel the need to add is A Beautiful Mind. Everyone was talking about how great it was when it first came out, and I sort of agreed. Then I saw it a second time, and realized just how silly it all really was.

Requiem for a Dream - it just isn't the mindblowing experience that people make it out to be

Titanic - the only reason for its success is DiCaprio. I don't want to hate on the guy; he's actually a good actor, but everything in Titanic was corny to the max. 90% of the revenue likely came from teenyboppers and older women who saw the movie at theatres multiple times

Phantom Menace - not directed nearly as well as the first 3 SW films, YouKnowWho, and retains none of the charm from the earlier chapters

There is a BIG difference between overhyped and overrated. Overhyped movies are just ones that come in with lots of anticipation and advertising. Being overhyped has nothing to do with whether people overrate the movie. If anything, I think TPM was UNDERRATED. Lots of people act like it's complete worthless crap and one of the worst movies ever made. It had it's flaws, but it was a decent movie.

My overrated list:

1) The Blair Witch Project-I've bashed this movie before, and I'll bash it again. I just hate it that damn much. This movie is a model of expert marketing. Remember how it was passed off in a way that made it seem like a real snuff film, in the months before it was released in theaters. Anybody who wasn't an idiot figured out that it wasn't soon enough, but the interest created by the early buzz was still there. People were curious about a movie that was filmed in such a unique way.

Also, the nonexistent budget made the movie virtually IMMUNE to artsy film critics, who scoff at any big budget popcorn movies. Not to mention that it was released at EXACTLY the right time. There was a big backlash at the time against big budget blockbusters, stemming from the dissappointment of TPM and the box office failure of Godzilla (which I didn't think was THAT bad, and unfairly bashed just like TPM) the year before.

The plot of TBWP was no better than the ghost stories told around any campfire. Not to mention that the three stars were a bunch of unlikable morons who couldn't act. Hell, I even read that in an effort to keep things "real," the actors IMPROVISED half their lines on the spot. It sure shows that, as well as the fact that the three of them are uncreative idiots who can't think up good lines if their lives depended on it. There was an entire scene were they did nothing but scream "FUCK YOU!!!" for five or ten minutes.

I failed to be scared by anything in this movie. Lots of film critic snobs kept praising the movie and saying that good horror films scare you with what you don't see - which is true to an extent. However, you still have to see something, ANYTHING, if you're going to be scared. Just what was supposed to be scaring me shitless? The "scary" sounds? The cheap arts and crafts the Blair Witch (or stalker, ghost, Big Bird, the film never bothers to tell us) hung up on a bunch of trees? Yet all the artsy critics were hailing this as the scariest movie ever made, and the savior of the horror genre. Among the general population, only the pussies and scaredy cats were ever frightened.

2) Citizen Kane-This is universally regarded as the greatest film ever made, but I can't see why. There was some nice cinematography and camera tricks, but the plot was nothing special, and I wasn't very entertained.

3) Titanic-How the hell is this movie the highest grossing EVER? I admire the amount of effort made in trying to authentically reproduce the ship, and the visual effects, but that's all the movie had going for it. The plot was just another star-crossed romance story, and I couldn't give a crap less about DiCaprio.

4) Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon-What was so amazing about this movie? The martial arts were phony and completely fake looking. I've seen much better action in many low-budget kung fu movies. I think the only reason Americans were impressed by this was because many of them never experienced Asian-style martial arts movies before. It wasn't nearly as well received in China. The plot itself was threadbare and pointless, and the final fight with Jade Fox was a complete disappointment.

5) The Matrix-A lot of people here brought up Reloaded; however, as I explained above, there's a big difference between overhyped and overrated. Reloaded is the former, but the first film is the latter.

After this movie came out, every action film ripped off its slow motion effects, and every comedy spoofed it. Legions of fanboys acted like it was the greatest action movie ever made, and one that had a "deep plot" as well. The action wasn't THAT great. How many fights were there even? Not that much. Lots of people were amazed by the lobby scene and the scene where Neo bends over backwards to dodge bullets, but they were nothing incredible. As for the plot, it was extremely threadbare and simple. Ooh wow, these guys are fighting to free humanity from a VR program. That's SO complex. Any "deepness" in the movie was just a bunch of EASY philosophical questions (seriously, I thought about whether or not it would even matter to be in a VR program if it realistically depicted life, even before the point was raised).

Titanic and the Matrix Trilogy. Don't make a multi-million dollar film about the greatest disaster of all time, then ram an overdone-to-hell love plot into it for fucks. Additionally, if you are making action films, do not ram overdone-to-hell Cartesian philosophy into it.
