Thats cause they voluntarilly joined the union and such after the united states was founded, right? The annexation of texas back in the 1830s or something cause they left mexico..

but if they left, wouldnt they legally be required to return to their pre-annexation size?

There are no federal statues on language, but I'm pretty sure only the Federal government can issue currency.

I'll probably have to look that up, but I know that regional banks once did that before the advent of the Federal Reserve System.

Perhaps they did it on the behalf of the Federal government? I really don’t think they where doing it independently.

IIRC, money was not neccessarily transferrable even between states what with banks not honoring notes, so it might not have been on behalf of the Federal government. Any international commerce probably used gold.

Um... Their pre-annexation size included parts of several other states...

*thinks back to Economic History*

Well, originally, the federal government just coined precious metals (gold and silver) and regulated their value. State-chartered banks kept reserves of this specie money and used it as backing when they made loans/issued bank notes, which essentially created private paper currency. There were thousands of different types of currencies in circulation during the Antebellum Era, after the abolition of the First National Bank.

Of course, I could be totally wrong about all this. Monetary history is tough to wrap your head around.

And we can fly our flag at the same level as the US flag. Not that Texas could survive as it's own country or that we could get through all the red tape. Hopefully those hicks up in North Texas will just forget the whole thing.

I don't believe Texas can legally secede any more than the original 13 can (they all joined the union voluntarily as well, as did Hawaii, though it's questionable if the so-called "Republic of Hawaii" had any legal standing). States are legally equal to each other and one cannot have special rights that the others don't have, and I believe this would apply to secession as well, even if the treaty of annexation gave Texas that right in theory.
